Emotionally Focused Therapy

EFT is an evidence-based approach to therapy primarily focused on relationships, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson. It operates on the belief that emotions are key to understanding and transforming relationships. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Attachment Theory Basis: EFT is deeply rooted in attachment theory, which suggests that humans are innately driven to seek closeness and connection with significant others. It explores how attachment patterns influence relationships and emotional interactions.
  • Emotional Awareness: EFT emphasizes the identification, understanding, and regulation of emotions. It encourages individuals to recognize their own emotions and the emotions of their partners, fostering empathy and deeper connection.
  • Patterns and Cycles: EFT focuses on recognizing negative cycles within relationships. These cycles often involve patterns of interaction that lead to disconnection or conflict. By identifying these patterns, EFT helps couples or individuals understand their dynamics and how to break free from destructive cycles.
  • Creating Secure Bonds: The goal of EFT is to create a secure emotional bond between partners. Therapists help couples or individuals to express their needs, fears, and desires in a way that promotes understanding, acceptance, and a sense of emotional safety.
  • Restructuring Interaction: EFT involves restructuring the way partners interact. This includes promoting healthier communication styles, fostering empathy, and encouraging responsiveness to each other’s needs.
EMDR therapy in charleston sc

EFT provides a structured and empathetic approach to addressing relationship issues, centering on emotional experiences and the way they shape our connections. It aims to create lasting change by fostering secure, trusting, and loving relationships.

This model of therapy is experiential and attachment-based. Experiential therapies are based on the idea that we don’t change from information or knowledge, we change through experiences. Meaning, we can’t just know something—we have to feel it, we have to do it.
